Outback Air Race 2015 Team ATOM
I had the pleasure of spending an hour or so with Allan & Jo who are off to compete in the Outback Air Race starting in Esperance WA on the 24th August and finishing on Hamilton Island in Queensland on the 4th September. The Outback Air Race is run every 2-3 years and Allan & Jo are competing as Team ATOM, fundraising much needed funds for the Royal Flying Doctor service and all money raised will go towards equipment.
Allan first competed in the air race in 2012, thinking he had a quick plane and what a great way to see part of Australia and raise much needed funds for an amazing cause, The Royal Flying Doctor. This year his beautiful wife Jo will be joining him as they compete together .
Allan & Jo have an auction night planned for this coming Saturday Night 25th July at Greenhills Bar and Cafe . With live entertainment by the band “2+1 ” consisting of well-known musician Dean Denton from Perth 80’s band, ‘The Frames”, and his children, Ash and Holly. This unique trio perform music ranging from Linda Ronstadt to Pink, Johnny Cash to Jason Mraz and a whole lot more in between. Delicious meals will also be available, it will be a great Family night out so come join in.
Starting at 6pm there will be some fabulous items up for auction .For a full list of items up for auction press HERE. You can also donate direct to TEAM ATOM fundraising page HERE, remember all donations over $2.00 are a tax deduction.
Their team name is in honour of their son Tom who was diagnosed in December 2002 with an aggressive Brain Tumour. Sadly Tom passed away on the 27th January 2003, just weeks after being diagnosed. I’m sure Tom will be flying with them on this amazing adventure and very proud. Tom would have turned 20 in June and is very sadly missed by his family. Allan & Jo farm here in our district with their eldest Son Josh his wife Chaise, Grandson Steele, Daughter Jess and youngest son Henry.
Allan has personally stepped up to help raise funds not only by tirelessly fundraising with Jo but by taking on a challenge also of not drinking alcohol for 8 weeks. After a huge night he made the comment in front of a mate, Phil and neighbour that he was never ever drinking again. Phil said he’d donate $1000 if he didn’t drink for the next 8 weeks. Allan accepted the challenge and has now lost 13 kg and completed the said challenge. Phil, true to his word, donated $1000 as he said he would … Awesome effort guys!
The Outback Air Race is an ongoing event held to raise much needed funds for the RFDS. The Outback Air Race is a GPS-based navigation time trial throughout the remote Australian outback. With as many as 60 competitors in 25 aircraft, pilots nominate an elapsed time between two waypoints, receiving points for both time and location accuracy.
With the aim to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, competitors and spectators have raised over $1.2 million since its inception in 1996. All funds from each race go towards outfitting RFDS aircraft with essential medical equipment, vital for treating sick and injured patients and saving lives of those who become critically ill and require urgent medical assistance. Having grown up in Outback South Australia I have witnessed on many occasions the amazing work that the RFDS do and the many many lives they have and continue to save.
